Achieve a Brighter, Whiter Smile with Teeth Whitening

Whitening your teeth is a simple, safe, and effective way to brighten your smile. Our doctors offer in-office and at-home teeth whitening in our New York, NY, dental practice. We offer two convenient options to suit your needs and schedule: in-office teeth whitening treatment and at-home teeth whitening treatment.

What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

Tooth discoloration is a common dental issue; the American Association of Orthodontists reports that nearly 90 percent of patients request tooth whitening. Frequent ingestion of certain foods and drinks such as coffee, black tea, soda, tomato sauce, berries, and citrus foods and drinks can cause unsightly staining that daily brushing and flossing cannot eliminate. Or, you might have yellowed teeth despite routine dental exams and cleanings.

Teeth whitening is a suitable treatment for most patients because it is a low-risk procedure. There are some patients, however, for whom teeth whitening is not an effective option:

  • Patients with restorations on front teeth (restorative materials do not respond to bleach)
  • Patients with intrinsic stains (stains affecting inner layers of a tooth)
  • Patients with worn enamel or extreme tooth sensitivity

In-office Teeth Whitening Treatment

If you choose in-office teeth whitening treatments, trained professionals will whiten your teeth with a special Opalescence® Boost whitening gel and the use of an activator light.

First, we will clean your teeth and gums thoroughly. Since the whitening gel can irritate the gums, a protective barrier will be placed to protect the soft tissues of your mouth. Next, the dentist will apply whitening gel to the exposed surfaces of your teeth. The dentist will ensure that the gel is applied evenly to achieve natural-looking results. Typically the gel remains on your teeth for 15 minutes. Afterward, it is removed, and after five to ten minutes, it is reapplied. Three or four applications are usually sufficient for achieving your goals. For most patients, one in-office whitening visit is adequate to obtain satisfactory whitening results, but patients with stubborn stains may need an additional treatment. You may want to have periodic whitening sessions to maintain your dazzling new smile.

At-home Teeth Whitening Treatment

Harlem Dentistry can provide you with a custom-made, all-inclusive procedure kit that will allow you to achieve great teeth whitening results in the comfort of your own home. To create the procedure kit, the dentist will first make impressions of your teeth. These impressions will be sent to the local dental laboratory to make whitening trays that will fit comfortably and securely in your mouth. At home, you will apply the provided whitening gel to the trays and fit the trays over your teeth. Most patients wear the at-home trays for 15 minutes to an hour each day, and the entire process takes about two weeks. You may perform the teeth whitening treatments periodically on an ongoing basis, but only under the guidance of your dentist.

Teeth whitening is a low-risk cosmetic procedure that can brighten your smile and enhance your appearance significantly.

With professional teeth whitening, you can achieve a dazzling white smile. This improvement can positively affect your self-confidence as well as other people’s perception of you. The procedure is also safe and non-invasive, especially compared to other smile improvement techniques such as dental bonding and veneers.
