To repair damage involving over ½ of the tooth's biting surface, rather than using a simple filling or a crown, Dr. Robertson can construct an inlay, or an onlay.
Amalgam fillings, also known as "silver" fillings, will darken and corrode as they age. Also, since they contain about 50% mercury, amalgam fillings expand and contract in response to hot and cold foods and liquids.
This action, over time, tends to damage and fracture the tooth from the inside, causing one of two serious problems to develop:
- the reoccurrence of decay under the filling which would soon require a root canal procedure; and
- eventually causing the tooth to crack or break, requiring a full crown restoration.
